Potomac Village Median Strip Construction Begins May 31

Little Farms Garden Club, the State Highway Association and the Potomac Chamber of Commerce have partnered to help beautify the median.

Potomac Village will be getting a minor facelift with the improvement of the median strip on River Road near the intersection of Falls Road.

The median strip, which is between the BP and Sunoco stations in Potomac Village, will be undergoing some improvements starting May 31 after the median became overgrown and unkempt, said Jennifer Matheson, the Director of Operations at Potomac Chamber of Commerce. Little Farms Garden Club, the State Highway Administration and the Potomac Chamber of Commerce have partnered to help beautify the median.

“The median has gotten a little unsightly and we will have a lot of people driving through the area with the U.S. Open and we want people to know that Potomac is a prestigious neighborhood and we want to put our best food forward,” Matheson said. “We are seen as a place with people who care about the community.”

Starting May 31, the SHA will begin construction by digging out all of the weeds and dirt in the median and paving it over. The new median will have stamped concrete that will look like bricks to match the nearby businesses, Matheson said. Construction will take approximately three days, she added.

Although Little Farms Garden Club initially proposed planting more greenery in the median, SHA advised against it because of the difficulty of maintaining plants and watering them regularly in such a busy intersection of the community, Matheson said.

One lane on each side of the median on River Road will be closed down during construction, which will take place during non-rush hour times.

The project has raised about $1,000 of donations from local businesses and organizations. Potomac Chamber of Commerce did not want to disclose the full price of the project, although an early estimate priced it at $23,000.
