Swains Lock, in Potomac, MD, is one of 75 lift locks along the C&O Canal.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park offers hikers, bikers, history buffs, and river and canal enthusiasts innumerable opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and the area's rich history.

Swains Lock, at mile 16.6 on the 184.5-mile towpath from Washington, D.C. (Georgetown) to Cumberland, MD, is a favorite spot for Potomac residents to gaze upon the Potomac River, walk along the towpath, fish, paddle, hike or bike.

The lock is No. 21 among 75 lift locks along the C&O Canal.

It's also one of 30 hiker-biker campgrounds located along the canal. There is no fee charged, and your stay is limited to one night per site, per trip. All sites have amenities including water, a picnic table and grill.
