County Mailing Coronavirus Stimulus Checks To Low-Income Families

Montgomery County will be sending a one-time coronavirus stimulus check to certain low-income residents.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Some low-income residents who aren't eligible for federal or state coronavirus benefits will be getting a one-time emergency assistance check from Montgomery County.

Residents with incomes less than 50 percent, who otherwise don't qualify for government aid, are eligible to receive a coronavirus stimulus check through the county's Emergency Assistance Relief Payment (EARP) program. Fifty percent of the federal poverty level for a single adult is an annual income of $6,380 and $10,860 for a family of three, according to the county.

Approximately 1,300 families who are served by the county's Care for Kids program with be the first recipients of payments, officials said. A family with one child with receive a check for $1,000, plus $150 for each additional child (up to $1,450 per family).

"It is no surprise that this crisis is hitting our poorest residents the hardest, which is why we developed this program," County Executive Marc Elrich (D) said.

The county's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will be dispersing about $2.5 million to residents. An additional $2.5 million will be given to individuals and families served by nonprofits organizations in the community.

Residents will have an opportunity to self-identify and apply directly to DHHS for assistance. Additional information will be announced later this week, according to officials.

"Our full range of services will remain open and available to all residents who need our help and support," said DHHS Director Raymond Crowel. "This funding comes at a critical moment and will give much needed assistance to those whose needs are most urgent."
