Montgomery County Coronavirus Update: 793 Cases, 19 Deaths

Montgomery County had 793 coronavirus cases and 19 deaths as of April 6. Meanwhile, the state is opening more testing sites this week.

ROCKVILLE, MD — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Montgomery County surpassed 790 on Monday, more than doubling the total from last week as more testing sites pop up across the state.

The Maryland Department of Health announced there are now 793 cases in Montgomery County — an increase of 100 from a day earlier. That's more than double the 341 cases reported on March 30.

Nineteen people have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, Montgomery County officials said. A week ago, the county's death toll stood at one.

Maryland reported its first coronavirus case on March 5. As of Monday morning, 4,045 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maryland. That's an increase of 436 confirmed cases, or nearly 12 percent, since Sunday when the state had 3,609 cases.

The death toll now stands at 91.

In total, 1,059 people have been hospitalized. Since Maryland reported its first coronavirus case, more than 29,000 people have been tested for the disease. As of Monday, 25,572 tests came back negative.

Montgomery County had the highest number of confirmed cases in the state until last week. The jurisdiction with the most now is Prince George's County. The total: 916.

The county with the fewest cases is Dorchester. Only one person has tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to state data released Monday.

Health officials say the number of cases will rise as more people get tested.

The Maryland Department of Health is offering drive-thru COVID-19 testing at a number of vehicle emissions inspection program (VEIP) sites. Five VEIP testing sites will open this week, including in Columbia and White Oak.

Testing is also available at the Bel Air VEIP, Glen Burnie VEIP, and Waldorf VEIP, according to officials.
