Rockville Man Charged With Fatally Stabbing Elderly Mother

Police say Hani Haleem stabbed his 82-year-old mother, Somaya, to death, then set their house on fire.

A Rockville man charged with murder reportedly stabbed his elderly mother, then set their home on fire, according to Montgomery County Police.

Detectives have charged Hani Haleem, 57, of 4610 Iris St. in Rockville, with the murder of his 82-year-old mother, Somaya Haleem, of the same address.

Fire and Rescue personnel, along with police, were called to a fire at the Haleem house early Thursday. Responders rescued Somaya Haleem from a second-story window; she was taken to a local trauma center where she was pronounced dead. An examination of her body revealed stab wounds in addition to injuries caused by the fire.

Detectives interviewed her adult son, Hani Haleem, who admitted to stabbing his mother multiple times. Investigators believe he then started a fire in the home.

The victim’s body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The findings are pending, but Somaya Haleem suffered stab wounds as well as injuries from the fire, authorities said.

Hani Haleem has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
