2nd Suspect Arrested In Silver Spring Armed Carjacking: Police

Montgomery County Police apprehended a second suspect wanted in an armed carjacking and robbery of a Silver Spring Popeyes restaurant.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Police arrested 30-year-old Kevin Smith in connection with an armed carjacking in Silver Spring and armed robbery of the Popeyes restaurant on Lockwood Drive on Nov. 10, according to a release. Smith is the second suspect to be charge in this case.

Officers responded around 9:06 p.m., on Nov. 10, to the unit block of White Oak Vista Court in Silver Spring for the report of an armed carjacking, according to police

A preliminary investigation revealed that two men wearing dark clothing and black ski masked approached a delivery driver as he was walking back to his car. One of the men pointed a black handgun at the victim and demanded his property and car. The two men drove off in the victim's gray 2019 Honda Accord.

Around 9:23 p.m., police responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Popeyes restaurant located at 11311 Lockwood Drive in Silver Spring.

Two men, whom police identified as the suspects wanted in the armed carjacking, entered the restaurant, pulled out a black handgun, and demanded money from the cashier, according to police. The suspects pointed the gun at a second employee, who'd come to the front after hearing loud screaming. That employee complied with the demands of the suspects and opened the restaurant safe. The suspects left the restaurant with an undisclosed amount of cash and drove off in the Honda Accord.

With the help of the Metropolitan Police Department and the Prince George’s County Police helicopter, Guardian 1, the Honda Accord was located in Washington, D.C. The driver, whom police identified as 30-year-old Keyren Chester Ross of Washington D.C., was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

After being taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, Ross was charged with armed robbery and armed carjacking related charges, according to police.

Through their investigation, detectives identified Smith as the second suspect in the case and obtained an arrest warrant for him on Nov. 27 on charges of armed carjacking and robbery.

Police located Smith on Nov. 30 in a vehicle in the area of Castle Boulevard and Briggs Chaney Road. After police attempted to arrest Smith, he ran off toward the Sport Chevrolet dealership in the 3000 block of Automobile Boulevard, where he hid a black fanny pack under a vehicle, according to police.

Running to Columbia Pike, Smith tried to escape in a vehicle with a woman and a child inside. But officers pulled Smith out of the vehicle and arrested him, according to police

Officers retrieved a 9mm Glock handgun from the fanny pack Smith hid in the parking lot of the car dealership.

Smith was taken to the county detention center and charged with attempted carjacking and multiple firearm charges as Smith is a prohibited person, according to police. Smith remains in the detention center, where he is being held without bond.
