Birth Certificate Office Reopens In Montgomery County: What To Do

The county's vital records service, which is responsible for birth certificates, has reopened. Here's what you need to know.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County's birth certificate service, which was temporarily closed in May, has set up shop at the Dennis Avenue Health Center in Silver Spring, according to local officials.

The office has walk-in hours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dennis Avenue Health Center is located at 2000 Dennis Ave.

The local vital records branch closed in early May because the new employee responsible for those birth certificates had to get trained by the state.

If you were born in Maryland, your birth certificate will be available at www.vsa.maryland.gov. To obtain your document, present a valid, unexpired government-issued ID, such as a driver's license or a U.S. passport. Your identification card must have an issue date and an expiration date.

According to county officials, only parents of legal guardians can obtain a child's birth certificate. If you're a a legal guardian, you must provide proof of guardianship. For adults, only the person named on the certificate, or his or her parents, can apply for a birth certificate.

All birth certificates are available at the Dennis Avenue Health Center for people born in Maryland after 1939. If you were born before 1939, contact the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Vital Records at 410-764-3063. Applications are available at http://dhmh.maryland.gov/vsa/Pages/birth.aspx.

You can also swing by any local health department in the state. Just check the individual websites to confirm office hours and the cost of a birth certificate.
