SILVER SPRING, MD — Nathaniel Potts of Silver Spring died from a fatal gunshot wound on Dec. 2, the same day as his birthday.

"The death was the day before our daughter's birthday," Viola Brock said, in an interview on Monday. "They always hang out for his birthday and they hang out for her birthday."

Potts was supposed to pick up their 10-year-old daughter from school that later in the day.

"Of course, he was killed that morning," Brock said. "So, that was difficult breaking that news to her on the day before her birthday and the day that she's looking forward to her dad picking her up. But, I definitely want you to know that they took one of her best friends away from her."

Early in the morning hours of Dec. 2, Montgomery County Police found Potts suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Summit Hills Apartment complex. The 29-year old was taken to the hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, but he later died there, according to police. To date, no one has been charged in the case.

Brock remembers Potts as a nice and caring man, who was motivated to pursue his dream of getting his music career up and going. He performed as "Nate Skywalker" throughout the Washington, D.C. area and had even recorded a few songs and albums.

"He was definitely a joker and a life of the party," Brock said. "A class-clown type of person."

On behalf of Potts' family, Brock organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to cover his funeral expenses and a celebration of his life.

" After everything is paid for, if there's anything left over, then it will go to a college fund for our daughter," Brock said.

As of 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 113 people had donated more than $6,535 toward the GoFundme's goal of raising $20,000.
