Police Officer Identified Who Shot Suspect In Silver Spring

Montgomery County Police on Monday released the name of an officer who shot a fleeing suspect in Silver Spring.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Police on Monday released the name of an officer who shot and wounded a fleeing suspect in Silver Spring. The shooting followed an emergency call to police from a driver who said his car was being rammed by an unknown SUV.

About 8:20 p.m. Sunday, a 29-year-old man who was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry called 911 to report a 2003 Cadillac Escalade was repeatedly slamming into his car at the Stoneymill Square shopping center at the corner of Veirs Mill Road and Randolph Road. Police say the first officer who arrived at the scene fired his service weapon and shot the 52-year-old man driving the SUV). Officers began life-saving measures and the Escalade driver was taken to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. His name has not been released.

The 911 caller who was targeted by the SUV driver was not injured. Authorities have not released his name, either.

The 10-year veteran officer who shot the suspect is Officer Todd Archer. He is assigned to the Patrol Division and works in the 4th District. According to department protocol, Officer Archer has been placed on paid administrative leave during the shooting investigation, officials said.

The circumstances leading up to the assault call and shooting remain under investigation. Once Major Crimes detectives complete the investigation, their findings will be reviewed by the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office.
