SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring man's error recently turned out to be a $50,000 windfall from the Maryland Lottery, according to a release.

The Montgomery County resident works as a construction worker, where attention to detail is extremely important.

“We have to be precise building bridges and overpasses,” he told lottery officials.

A few weeks ago during his lunch break, the man purchased a scratch-off ticket at the Metro Coffee Convenience located at 202 Park Road in Rockville.

“It was a Friday, I get a ticket every weekend,” he said, in the release. “When I figured out which scratch game to play, I pressed that ticket on the screen, but it was the wrong one. I pressed the one next to it, the wrong ticket.”

When the Silver Spring man realized he'd made an error, he chastised himself and returned to his car. That's where he discovered that the instant ticket he'd mistakenly purchased for the $50,000 Cash game was a winner.

“When I saw the prize, I couldn’t believe it. ‘This can’t be true,’ I thought," he said. But it was true, he'd lucked into winning the $50,000 top prize.

The man told lottery officials that he and his wife plan to use the winnings to purchase property sometime next year.

For selling a winning ticket for the $50,000 Cash game, Metro Coffee Convenience will receive a $500 bonus from the lottery.
