1. Washington County Sports Hall will induct five in Class of 2026 (heraldmailmedia.com) — Two familiar Smithsburg names are headed into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: standout multi-sport athlete and current lacrosse coach Ganley, and Mayor Donnie Souders for his long officiating career. They join three other inductees to be honored July 18 in Hagerstown. The banquet will also feature scholarships and service awards for recent local graduates.

2. County looking at FY2027 POS list that includes Widmeyer Park project (thehancocknews.com) — Smithsburg families could soon see a new playground at Lions Park thanks to FY2027 Program Open Space funding recommended by Washington County. The proposed project list, which commissioners were expected to approve, fully funds all sponsor requests, including Smithsburg’s playground replacement. Other POS projects span Boonsboro, Hagerstown, Sharpsburg and Hancock park improvements across the county.

3. Washington County celebrates 250 years with drones, collectible coins (heraldmailmedia.com) — Smithsburg is part of Washington County’s 250th anniversary celebration, including a collectible coin program that encourages residents to visit participating towns. If you collect coins from Smithsburg and other municipalities, you can trade them for a special capstone coin and box at the big July 4 event. That celebration will feature bands, a car show, kids’ activities, a drone show and fireworks.

Rice on Transource, It's Return and the Fight Back (fcfreepresspa.com) — A major high‑voltage transmission project is planned to end at the Ringgold substation in Smithsburg, potentially tying local infrastructure into a controversial regional power line. Pennsylvania regulators are weighing a revised 29‑mile route after federal courts limited the state’s power to block it. Opponents say the project harms Franklin County farmland without clear benefits, and they’re organizing petitions, letters, and hearings as the case advances.
