The scholarship program is open to high school seniors residing within the Greater Washington, D.C., area - including the District of Columbia and parts of Maryland, Northern Virginia, and West Virginia. Applicants must plan to enroll as a full-time undergraduate student at a college or university in fall 2013 through spring 2014.
“As part of McDonald’s commitment to education and the community, [the McDonald's Family Restaurants of Greater Washington, D.C.] believe it is important to recognize young people who try to make a positive contribution to their community,” said Cindy Levine, McDonald’s Franchisee and McDonald’s Educates Scholarships Committee member. “We are proud to honor those students through the annual scholarship program.”
In the spring of 2012, $93,000 in scholarships was awarded to 55 local students to attend the college or university of their choice. To date, the McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Greater Washington, D.C. have awarded over $700,000 to local students through the annual McDonald’s Educates Scholarship Program.
This year, scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive one scholarship in the amount of $5,000 or $1,500 which will go directly to the college or university the recipient plans to attend. A total of 60 scholarships will be awarded. In addition to being announced and recognized at a reception in the spring of 2013, winners will also be featured in a publicity campaign.
