Frugal Family: Five Deals to Stretch the Family Budget

Welcome back to our weekly rundown of five local deals to help with your family’s bottom line. Since we do the scouting, we save you time as well as money.

This week we scoured our local sources with Mother's Day in mind, and found deals on taking mom out for a (free!) treat and money-saving gift ideas. Plus with Cinco de Mayo also this week, we found a few celebrations offering low-cost festivities. Remember to check with the merchant for additional conditions, if any:

1. Mother's Day Treat (free!): , 7071 Carroll Ave, 301-270-7260.

Deal:  Bring mom in to on Mother's Day and she'll receive a free mini cheesecake of her choice.

2. Shoes for Mom (and a bonus for you): , 910 Ellsworth Dr., 301-565-8832.

Deal: Get a $10 bonus card with the purchase of each $50 gift card.

Good through: May 8 (Mother's Day).

3. Sewing, Decorating & Crafts: Hancock Fabrics, 7980 New Hampshire Ave., Langley Park, 301-439-3100.

Deal: Save up to 50 percent store wide during the final week of their Spring Cleaning sale. Also save 40 percent on outdoor and vinyl fabrics and 50 percent on already-reduced decorator fabrics.

4. Cinco de Mayo Specials: , 919 Ellsworth Dr, 240-247-8969.

Deal:  After the downtown Silver Spring's Cinco de Mayo celebration, continue the party with food and drink specials at Austin Grill, which will serve up $4 Tex-Mex margaritas, $2 El Diablo shots and hot wings and taquito specials all evening.

Good through: May 5 (Cinco de Mayo), 8:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.

Deals:  Chevys celebrates Cinco de Mayo with four days of specials, including $3 margaritas on Monday; one-cent "Wacky Combos" on Tuesday (buy any combo and get a second for 1-cent, of equal value or less) and $ 2 - 3 beer on Wednesday. Festivities peak on Thursday with an indoor-outdoor celebration, featuring $2 Tequila shots, $2 off Cadillac margaritas, $5 draft beer in the cantina, and a taco bar serving up $2 tacos, wings and chicken flautas.
