More Time for Takoma Junction Deal, Update on Tenants

Developers have an additional 30 days to secure a deal with Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op after City Council vote Dec. 7.

TAKOMA PARK, MD — Developers of the city's Takoma Junction project will have another 30 days to negotiate a letter of intent for tenant space with the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op. The city-owned parking lot at Takoma Junction will be redeveloped to revive the commercial area, but developers must secure a tenant agreement with the co-op, first.

The Takoma Park City Council approved the extension at a Dec. 7 business meeting, and it is now effective until Jan. 6, 2017. The Takoma Park City Council's previously selected Neighborhood Development Company (NDC) and SORG Architects for the project.

NDC's President Adrian Washington presented plans at the meeting Dec. 7 and announced that NDC signed a Letter of Intent with the Ability Project. NDC will provide a second story, 6,000 square-foot-space in the development for adults with special needs to have a supportive environment in which they can meet and relax.

"The goals of the City Council regarding the Takoma Junction development project remain: improve the aesthetic appeal of the commercial district and be contextually sensitive and environmentally sustainable," City Manager Suzanne Ludlow wrote in a message to residents prior to last week's meeting. "The Council has repeatedly expressed its concern for the well-being of the Co-op, particularly its need for continuity of operations. And, the Council is looking at the long term needs of the City’s taxpayers, by putting a key property back on the tax rolls."
