With Scores Falling Across Districts, Local Teacher Launches Tutoring Service

(Takoma Park, Maryland – June 25, 2013) - With data continuing to flood the media landscape about falling test scores and reduced education aptitude, one local teacher has launched a new effort focused on boosting academic performance in both testing and classroom scenarios. Naomi Perl, a local resident and long-time teacher at DC Prep, the highest-performing network of charter schools in Washington, D.C., has launched TakomaTutors, a new venture to address some of the issues currently facing students in the classroom. Perl points to recent media coverage including an article in the Washington Post concerning failing scores (see “Montgomery considers multiple factors in math exam failure rates”, Washington Post; May 19, 2013) to highlight the reality that some students just need that extra push. “There is no doubt that teachers, like myself, are doing all we can to help students succeed, but with increased scrutiny on getting students proficient on academic standards, some individualized attention can be lost.” With her new venture, Perl, who moved to the Takoma Park neighborhood last year, hopes to impart her decade of lower and upper elementary classroom knowledge to students in all academic areas.   Naomi Perl is currently a highly-qualified 3rd grade teacher at DC Prep’s Edgewood Elementary Campus in Washington, D.C. – the top elementary school east of Rock Creek Park – where she began as a founding faculty member in 2007.  She lives on Parkside Road with her family.
