Albert W. Rubeling, Founder and President of Towson-based Rubeling & Associates – one of the region’s leading architecture and interior design firms – was invited to speak at the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA) 2013 National Convention, being held June 20-22 in Denver, Colorado.
Rubeling will participate in a panel with Kevin Collins, Associate AIA, RPLU, SeniorVice President at Victor O. Schinnerer & Company and Frank Musica, Esq.,Senior Risk Management Attorney at Victor O. Schinnerer & Company on the topic of Lending a Practice: Making the Transition to Running Your Own Firm.
The panel will discuss the challenges of starting a firm, particularly in the current economic climate. Speaking from experience, thepanel will also focus on the practical, professional, ethical, legal, and insurance issues that a new firm faces. This session will examine the issues involved in getting started and in staying solvent.

In addition to the discussion, the speakers will provide valuable hand-out management resources to assist architects in negotiating contracts, managing their exposures, and measuring the financial success of their own practices.

The AIA National Convention and Design Exposition will bring together principals, partners, and other top level leaders who set budgets, select vendors, and specify products.
Al founded Rubeling & Associates in 1981. Over the years, Al was appointed to two terms of the Maryland State Board of Architects and the Baltimore County Architectural Review Board. He is currently a Lecturer at University of Maryland College Park School of Architecture.
Al has served as president of the Baltimore and Maryland Chapters of the American Institute of Architects. In 2011, he was appointed as the Secretary of the College of Fellows for the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The members of the College of Fellows elected Rubeling to serve the two-year term citing his proven leadership and outstanding contributions to both the AIA and architecture industry as a whole. In 2015, Al is poised to become the Chancellor of the College of Fellows, which is the third top leadership position within AIA National.
He is the 2007 recipient of The Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award.
