ALBERT W. RUBELING APPOINTED AS CHANCELLOR TO THE COLLEGE OF FELLOWS FOR THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

Albert W. Rubeling, Jr., FAIA, Senior Vice President of Towson-based Rubeling & Associates, A JMT Division, has officially begun his new role as the 53rd Chancellor of the College of Fellows for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

He was inaugurated at an event on December 11, 2014. The members of the College of Fellows elected Rubeling citing his proven leadership and outstanding contributions to both the AIA and architecture profession as a whole. The function of the College of Fellows is to promote the purposes of the AIA and to advance the profession of architecture, as well as to provide services to society.

“I have followed and admired Al Rubeling’s career since he first established his firm in Baltimore,” says Harold L. Adams, AIA College of Fellows Chancellor in 1998 and former Chairman of RTKL. “I cannot think of anyone better qualified and dedicated to the College to serve as our Chancellor.”

In 1993, at the age of 36, Rubeling was accepted into the College of Fellows, the highest honor in the American Institute of Architects. At that time, he was the youngest in the College’s history to be nominated.

He has served as President of the Baltimore and Maryland chapters of the AIA, on the National Board of Directors, and as a Trustee of the National AIA Trust. He is the 2007 recipient of AIA The Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award.

In 1997, Rubeling founded the Chancellor’s Cup Golf Tournament to benefit the College of Fellows Benjamin Latrobe Prize. Held each year during the AIA National Convention, the event has sold out every year. To date, over $475,000 has been raised for the Latrobe Prize, Mentoring the Young Architects Forum, and providing component Grants for the Emerging Professionals Program. Rubeling and his committee of volunteers are currently planning the 19th tournament to be held in Atlanta in May 2015.

Over the past 30 years, Rubeling has been appointed to the Maryland State Board of Architects and the Baltimore County Architectural Review Board. He is past president of the Essex Community College Foundation, and former member of Leadership Baltimore County and Baltimore Foundation of Architecture. Al has chaired the Architecture Committee for the Baltimore/Richard Bloch Cancer Survivors Park in Towson, Maryland and served on the Board for The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. He also served as a Trustee for St. James Academy as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Al is also currently on the faculty at the University of Maryland College Park School of Architecture instructing the course “Careers in Architecture.”
