On The Border Launches New Prototype in Towson

Tex-Mex chain On The Border opened a new restaurant in Towson Monday that incorporates a fresh look for the national brand, officials said. The opening of the East Joppa Road eatery also brings more than 100 jobs to Baltimore County.

From guacamole prepared tableside to fish tacos cooked on the mesquite grill, On The Border offers a menu of Tex-Mex favorites as well as a cantina for those seeking the bar scene.

The Towson eatery features a “new state-of-the-art prototype” with a “great natural look that honors the Tex-Mex roots” of the chain, On The Border President Ward Whitworth told Restaurant News.

“Downtown Towson is fast becoming the place where national brands launch new concepts,” Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said in prepared remarks. He noted that Cinemark debuted its reserve-level seating movie theater concept and LA Fitness developed a custom design for its nearby gym.

On The Border’s new prototype features an open kitchen with a mesquite wood-burning grill as well as unique art and décor, said Kamenetz, who was among those in attendance at Monday’s ribbon-cutting in Towson Square.

Bright colors and rustic touches greet patrons, who may lounge in a 30-seat outdoor patio, the 248-seat restaurant, or the cantina where signature beer-bottle chandeliers dangle overhead, according to Restaurant News.

More than 150 On The Border locations have opened across the U.S. since the 1982 founding of the franchise in Dallas. Other Maryland restaurants are in Elkridge and Bowie.

The Towson restaurant is bringing 125 new jobs to downtown Towson, according to a statement from Baltimore County.

On the Border is located at 121 East Joppa Road in Towson. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Sunday.
