Coronavirus Response: Towson Cancels Classes, Sends Students Home
Towson University provides guidance around spring break, large gatherings based on the new coronavirus.
TOWSON, MD — After the chancellor for the University System of Maryland advised students to prepare for two weeks off campus after spring break, Towson University directed people to leave even sooner if they can.
The University System of Maryland spring break runs from Saturday, March 14, to Sunday, March 22.
Towson University is canceling classes as of Wednesday, March 11, through the end of the week, according to university officials. Campuses in Bel Air (TUNE), Shady Grove, College of Southern Maryland and Hagerstown will all cancel classes "to prepare for potential remote teaching, learning and working after spring break," Towson University said in a statement.

"When preparing to leave for spring break, we ask students take all essential belongings, medications, and materials from your residence hall or work space," Towson University officials advised, "in case it should become necessary to restrict return access to campus for at least two weeks."
To minimize the spread of the new coronavirus, the new guidance calls on students to practice social distancing by using the Blackboard app so they can participate in class remotely. Social distancing entails avoiding mass gatherings and keeping about 6 feet from oneself and others.
"Effective immediately, we are suspending all university-sponsored events and gatherings, including events sponsored by any registered student organizations, through March 22," Towson officials said in a statement Tuesday, March 10.
People are also advised not to travel beyond a 50-mile radius.
Officials said the campus will remain open even if in-person classes are restricted after break.
