Driver Charged in York Road Building Crash

Police said the Baltimore County woman was preparing to park when she landed a spot in the side of the Drumcastle Center.

A Middle River woman was charged after crashing her vehicle into a government complex in Towson Thursday morning, police said.

At 7:43 a.m. on Thursday, Hiwot Tekleab Arbi was in the 6400 block of York Road when she failed to control the speed of her vehicle, according to online court records.

Arbi, 48, of the 900 block of Gladway Road in Middle River, had been speeding through the parking lot of the Drumcastle Center—where approximately 860 state and county employees work—and was preparing to park when she hit a parked Chevy Blazer, police said.

The gold Blazer rotated and hit another parked vehicle, according to a statement from the Baltimore County Police Department, which said both vehicles were vacant.

Arbi continued driving “at an apparent high rate of speed” when she hit the curb and her Toyota RAV4 soared in the air and crashed into the building, the statement said.

Arbi and her passenger had minor injuries and refused medical transport, according to police.

After the incident, a 45-year-old Baltimore County social services worker was taken to Sinai Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Engineers determined the damage to the building was superficial, according to police, who said the area around the hole in the building from the RAV4 would be off limits until the area was repaired.

The building was evacuated until the vehicle was removed from the building and inspectors cleared the area, according to police.

Arbi was charged with failure to control speed on the highway to avoid a collision.
