GBMC Becomes The First Nurse Residency Program
In The Maryland Collaborative To Achieve Highest Level of Accreditation

Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) Nurse Residency Program recently achieved accreditation with distinction, the highest level of recognition, from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation validates hospital residency or fellowship programs that transition registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses into new practice settings that meet rigorous, evidence-based standards for quality and excellence. Nurses in accredited transition programs, like the one at GBMC, experience curricula that promote the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors necessary to deliver safe, high-quality care.
GBMC’s Nurse Residency Program is a one-year program designed for all new graduates of an accredited Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to facilitate the transition into professional practice. The program provides educational opportunities to promote critical thinking, leadership, and professional development.

“I have always known that our program is of the highest standards and quality, it's fulfilling to see our efforts validated in a systematic and comprehensive peer review,” said JoAnn Z. Ioannou, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, GBMC HealthCare as Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer. “This ANCC accreditation ensures that GBMC can continue to attract the best and brightest nursing graduates, as well as, become a true destination for new nurses.”
Only 61 nurse residency programs in the world received accreditation, and even fewer were accredited with distinction. GBMC’s program is the second one in Maryland to receive this distinction and the first in the Maryland Nurse Residency Collaborative.
