Goucher College Professor Emeritus Rolf Muuss Dies

With great sadness, we share the news that Professor Emeritus of Education Rolf Muuss
died on July 3, 2020. Muuss was a beloved professor at Goucher College for more than
three decades. From 1959 until his retirement in 1995, Muuss was a professor, chair
of education, director of special education, and chair of sociology and anthropology.

Muuss was a leader in his field of study. In addition to publishing more than 100
research studies and articles in medical, psychological, and educational journals,
he authored First-Aid for Classroom Discipline Problems as well as six editions of the textbook Theories of Adolescence.

In honor of his contributions to the Goucher education department, the second-floor
lobby in Van Meter Hall is named for him, along with his good friend and colleague,
Professor Emeritus Eli Velder. In honor of his service to the college, the Rolf E.
Muuss Prize Fund is given annually to the most promising student in special education.
Gifts may be made in memoriam to the fund.

The Goucher community is invited to gather virtually via Zoom for a memorial to be
held in August.
