Student Stars to Shine at Baltimore County's African American Cultural Festival

Five standout students will receive scholarships at this weekend’s African American Cultural Festival in Towson.

Superintendent S. Dallas Dance will present scholarships to the following class of 2014 graduates at the festival, according to a statement from Baltimore County Public Schools:

• Jazzlyn Monique Briscoe, Milford Mill Academy graduate attending Capital University
• Cameron Xavier Carroll, Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts graduate attending the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore
• Darin Kela Dabney, Milford Mill Academy graduate attending the Community College of Baltimore County
• Nyah D. Warren, Randallstown High School graduate attending Hampton University
• Janice Olivia Wilkins, Randallstown High School graduate attending Syracuse University

Before the presentations, the Milford Mill Chorale will perform at 12:15 p.m. Then, the five students will be recognized with scholarships for their community service and academic excellence at 1 p.m., according to Baltimore County Public Schools.

This marks the 18th year Baltimore County has celebrated the festival, which draws 40,000 people for entertainment; exhibits and historic tributes; vendors; children’s activities; empowerment villages; local talent; and information tables staffed by nonprofit organizations and federal, state and county agencies. Proceeds go toward funding student scholarships, helping underprivileged children attend summer camp and preserving African American artifacts in the county.

The Baltimore County African American Cultural Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Towson Courthouse in Patriots Plaza (400 Washington Avenue) in Towson. The Milford Mill Chorale will perform at 12:15 p.m., followed by scholarship presentations at 1 p.m.
