Threat At Dumbarton Middle Reported Amid Outage

A student at Dumbarton made a comment during a power outage that reportedly caused parents to pick up their children early.

TOWSON, MD — A Dumbarton Middle School student reportedly made a threat Friday morning that caused alarm and prompted a voicemail to parents. The threat came as schools across the country are on alert, less than a month after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 16 people.

The student made an "inappropriate comment suggesting that there was a threat to Dumbarton," Principal Susan Harris said in a subsequent voicemail to families, in which she also noted that administrators were investigating an "inappropriate social media post" as well, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Six police cars were out front when dozens of parents arrived to pick up their children early, many in panic mode after a series of unhinging events, according to the Towson Flyer: a Dumbarton student posted a picture of himself with a weapon on social media, a power outage occurred at the school and a student said something indicating the loss of power was connected to an "imminent threat of violence," the newspaper said.

The power outage occurred Friday morning at the school at 300 Dumbarton Road, which is undergoing a renovation project. The Dumbarton Middle School renovation, which began in 2016, is expected to be completed by June, officials reported to the Board of Education at a meeting last month.

The student who yelled a threat when the power went out Friday and the student who posted a picture of himself on social media with a plastic gun were both removed from classes, and each will face disciplinary action, according to ABC 2 News.

The incident occurred a little more than a month after a knife on a school bus to Dumbarton Middle resulted in two students being charged as juveniles.
