So when the chance arose be part of that momentum, Caccamese decided to go for it.
Next month, she will be the new medical director at the Towson University Health Center
at Ward & West.
It won’t be much of a physical move for Caccamese, who previously worked down the
street at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Group as a primary care doctor
with a focus on internal medicine.
“I’ve dreamt of working on a college campus because I’ve always liked the energy that
college students bring,” she says. “I’m excited for this new chapter. At my past jobs,
I took care of patients of all ages, up to 100 years old. And while you want to focus
on prevention, sometimes you have to put out fires.
“I think with a younger and, in general, healthier population, you can focus a little
bit more on wellness and prevention, which I’m looking forward to.”
Caccamese graduated from Washington & Jefferson College with a bachelor’s degree in
chemistry and received her medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine. This
was followed by residency training at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where
she acted as assistant chief of service.
She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and has been board certified
in internal medicine since 2000. She’s also been on the clinical faculty at Johns
Hopkins University and the University of Pittsburgh and part of the faculty at the
GBMC internal medicine residency program.
“I love teaching,” Caccamese says. “It’s really fun to teach clinically and learn
from a patient because it allows you to better yourself with experience. I hope as
part of my administrative role here, I get to advocate for students who are going
into health professions.”
Her duties will alternate between clinical—treating students—and administrative, overseeing
the medical operations of the Health Center.
Along with continuing the center’s current initiatives, she’s also looking to expand
telehealth and preventative services to students.
This includes teaching about vaccinations, sexual health, injury prevention, proper
sleep habits, dietary needs and partnering with the Counseling Center to help with
mental health and drug and alcohol abuse issues.
“My goal is for the Health Center to be an accessible and convenient place for all
Towson University students to address their health care needs,” she says.
