'Over the Moon' Promises Laughs

Students from five county high schools collaborated for "Over the Moon: A Fairytale for All Ages" this weekend at Winters Mill High School.

Drama students from across the county have been 'over the moon' since June.

This Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, 50 students from five county high schools will perform "Over the Moon: A Fairytale for All Ages" at Winters Mill High School.

Proceeds from the event will help fund a county-wide spring dramafest at which theatre students can take workshops and show off their school's productions.

North Carroll High School's theatre director, Roberta Gore, is directing this collaborative show. She said that it has been tough getting the show together because there are so many conflicts when working with students from five schools.

"The biggest challenge is that we started in June," Gore said. "There are so many conflicts; they are all overcommitted kids."

But Gore added that the actors and support crew have likely gained valuable experience in the collaborative nature of the production.

"I think they probably are learning from the unfamiliarity of the experience, working with teachers they don't know," Gore said. "They're all excellent so it's probably encouraging and inspiring to be on stage with a whole slew of people who are equally talented. And just being outside of your own zone is good."

The play and lyrics were written by Jodi Picoult. The premise of the show is the moon is looking down on mankind and wonders what ever happened to true love. She jumps down to earth to find out and in the process falls in love herself.

Gore said the show will appeal to all ages.

"It's truly a funny play," Gore said. "It's a brand new play. It's got this very 60s motif and the dialogue is hilarious. There are all these great characters. Children will love it because every fairytale character they can imagine is in the show."

"Over the Moon: A Fairytale for All Ages" will show at at 7:30 p.m. March 9 and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on March 10. Tickets cost $5 for kids 13 and under and $7 for students and adults.
