Opera Singer Turned Indie Rock Musician Plays in Downtown Wheaton This Friday

Margot MacDonald will play in downtown Wheaton this Friday as part of the Urban District's summer concert series. Band members KC Hatton and Alan Kayanan will join MacDonald.

Margot MacDonald describes her sound as, “indie rock/a cappella.” She lists Imogen Heap, KT Tunstall and Jeff Buckley as a few of the musicians who inspire her, but she has her ears open to it all.

“There are a lot of great musicians out there. I try to draw from all musical genres. I don’t think there are any bad genres of music," she said.

MacDonald, who grew up in Washington, D.C., started singing with Washington Opera when she was just ten years old. But she became more interested in writing her own material and released her first album of original music seven years ago. That work eventually lead to an artist-in-residence program at Strathmore a few years ago.

“They have a great program. They really bring you into the family," MacDonald said of her experience.

After spending much of her summer touring the east coast, MacDonald looks forward to playing near her hometown this Friday.
