MA Has 5 Of The 30 Most Expensive Colleges In U.S., Analysis Says

YOURPATCH — Five colleges or universities in Massachusetts are among the 30 most expensive higher education institutions in the country, according to a new analysis.

The analysis by The College Investor, an independent financial media outlet, is based on the institutions’ published tuition and fees for the 2024-25 school year.

The most expensive school in Massachusetts is Amherst College, with a published annual tuition rate of $ 69,820 per year.

Amherst College was founded in 1821 and is exclusively an undergraduate liberal arts college. This highly selective college has 42 majors in an open curriculum — where students can essentially design their own interdisciplinary major.

There are currently about 1,900 students enrolled.

Amherst is ranked as the sixth most expensive college or university in the country.

Among the others in the top 30 are:

21. Wellesley College, $66,880

24. Boston University, $66,670

26. Boston College, $66,410

27. Tufts University, $66,358

College in general is expensive, but the 30 on the list are especially so. On average, annual tuition at a private school is about $41,450, but the 30 on the list cost about $65,000 a year, The College Investor said.

Most of these colleges offer generous financial aid packages, which may come in the form of scholarships, both need- and merit-based; grants, work-study programs; fellowships and student loans, the site said.
