Rochester Girl Killed In Avalanche While Vacationing With Family In Utah
The girl's family and more than 20 volunteers began the search and rescue effort before numerous emergency agencies responded, police said.
BRIGHTON, UTAH — An 11-year-old Rochester girl was killed in an avalanche while vacationing with her family in Utah.
Madelyn Eitas died at Brighton Ski Resort Feb. 19, the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake said in a media release.
Police and firefighters were called to the resort about 12:30 p.m. but Eitas' family and more than 20 volunteers had already started a search and rescue effort, according to the release.

"Her brother Cameron Eitas heroically used an application to locate her," the release said. "Numerous agencies responded and worked together in an urgent and coordinated effort to care for the victim in attempts to provide life-saving measures."
Eitas was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, according to the release, but "tragically passed away."

Eitas "loved dancing, singing, spending time with friends, playing soccer, and swimming," according to her obituary.

"She enjoyed four-wheeler rides in the woods with Daddy, skiing, shopping trips with Mom, jet ski rides, boat rides at the lake house and on the ocean, baking, and making snow angels in the winter," her obituary said. "She lived life with energy, joy, and adventure."
