Hoarding is a complex mental health disorder with serious consequences for the individual who hoards, others living in the home, and the community. It is estimated to affect 3-5% of the population. This course will present a model for understanding and treating hoarding using cases to illustrate. Dr. Schmalisch is a psychotherapist in private practice at the Lydian Center for Innovative Medicine in Cambridge, MA and a staff therapist at Hope Psychological Services. She holds a PhD in cognitive science from MIT and an MSW from the BU School of Social Work (BUSSW). Dr. Schmalisch held the position of project director and therapist for the Psychopathology and Treatment of Compulsive Hoarding Project at BUSSW from 2005-2008. She is a co-author of 3 published articles about hoarding and hoarding treatment and of the Hoarding Handbook: A Guide for Human Service Professionals. Dr. Schmalisch is an instructor with the Mass Housing Tenant Assistance Program (TAP).
