Do you have an automatic irrigation system? Are you tired of high water bills? Looking to enjoy your lawn and landscape without breaking the bank or your back? The Acton Water District is sponsoring a free workshop that promotes water conservation and efficient lawn watering techniques.
The workshop, “Irrigation Systems 101,” will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 1st at the Acton Memorial Library. Certified irrigation auditor and contractor Ted Moriarty will guide you on how to properly use and maintain your irrigation system for maximum watering efficiency. Learn how to use your controller and develop an economical watering schedule that will keep your landscape looking great.
Besides causing high summer water bills, over-watering can cause many common lawn problems. Too much water usually causes much more damage than under-watering does -- this is because most varieties of turf handle short droughts fine, but can be wrecked with flooding. Brown patches (commonly a fungal infection) on the lawn can often be attributed to over-watering. Over-watering also encourages shallow plant roots that make grass more susceptible to pest and weed damage.
Most grass requires about one inch of water per week to optimally provide moisture for healthy lawns. Some weeks natural rainfall provides sufficient water and supplemental irrigation is not necessary. Use a rain gauge (available at the Acton Water District office) or a soil moisture meter to keep tabs on how much rain your lawn is getting and supplement as needed with your sprinkler.
