The League of Women Voters-Acton Area invite community members to view the documentary King Corn on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 2:15 p.m. at Acton Memorial Library.
In this 2007 documentary, two college friends from the Boston area, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, return to their family roots in Iowa and spend a year growing corn on one acre of land. Their quest begins when they discover through lab analysis of their hair that their bodies are primarily made out of corn. Corn?
Through their year of exploration and interviews with friendly neighbors and experts like Michael Pollan and former Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz they discover that Americans are so “corny” because almost everything we consume ultimately derives from corn, either high fructose corn syrup or from corn-based animal feed. Along the way they lose money, learn about crop subsidies, gain a better understanding about today’s farming and our food network. The movie is humorous and thought-provoking, and guaranteed to raise many questions about the food we eat and how we farm.
