All about Orchids and Books in Bloom

Spade & Trowel Garden Club of Andover is pleased to announce two upcoming events: On Tuesday, May 17, at its 7:00 p.m. meeting at West Parish Church Fellowship Hall, the club will present a speaker on orchids. Dr. Paul Steen, a retired physician and healthcare software executive, has been gardening for 50+ years. He has owned a hobby greenhouse for the past 30 years, where he grows camellias, succulents and tropical plants. Paul became a certified Master Gardener in 2005 with the Mass Horticultural School and is currently the past president of the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association. His talk will be about "Orchids made simple," with the basics of orchid care simplified so that beginners can easily start this fascinating garden specialty. It covers the six easiest orchids to grow with specific hints on how to care for them. The public is most cordially invited to attend this lecture.

Spade & Trowel is also proud to present its annual Books in Bloom event from May 18 - 20 at Memorial Hall Library. The display is a kind of twist, on a small scale, of the MFA's Art in Bloom exhibit. Club members will draw on book cover designs or book themes for inspiration for their floral creations. The books will be featured next to the arrangements, with brief summaries, and will be placed throughout the Library. Over a number of years, this exhibit has brought enjoyment and pleasure to many library patrons and the garden club hopes that residents will take the opportunity to view it during regular library hours.

Spade & Trowel Garden Club, a non-profit organization, is active in many capacities in the town of Andover, and is a member of Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and National Garden Clubs, Inc. Find us on Facebook and www.spadeandtrowelgardenclub.org.
