Included on these lists are The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
A separate, non-required book list has been compiled. It features both fiction and non-fictional works and the majority of the list are recent publications.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is a new take on murder mysteries. It is told from the perspective of an autistic boy, Christopher John Francis Boone, who has unique mathematical gifts but lacks the social skills of his peers.
After being found holding his neighbor's dead dog one evening, Christopher is wrongfully jailed and resolves that he will find the dog's true murderer. To help him accomplish this task, a social worker encourages him to write a book dedicated to the investigation, which becomes known as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
The story is about 250 pages long and is a work of fiction.
The Hobbit is a much-beloved tale, recently popularized by the films. It follows the journey of a classic underdog, Bilbo Baggins, who wants nothing more than to be live in peace and quiet... that is until he gets his first taste of adventure upon meeting a group of dwarves. The dwarves are on a mission to reclaim their long-lost home and take back immeasurable fortunes from the dragon that now hoards it.
The book is about 300 pages long and is also a work of fiction
