Investigation Finds Andover Coach Swore, Used Racial Stereotypes

E.J. Perry will have to "develop coaching strategies to use the power of positive reinforcement" as a condition of his reinstatement.

ANDOVER, MA -- The Eagle Tribune is reporting that Andover High School boys volleyball coach used demeaning comments about players, as well as stereotypes about Asian-American athletes. The investigation, according to the newspaper, also found that Perry used threats of locker room violence for on-court mistakes. Perry declined comment but confirmed he had been reinstated after being placed on administrative leave.

As a condition of his reinstatement, Perry has to apologize to the team, work with Athletic Director William Martin to "develop coaching strategies to use the power of positive reinforcement to pursue winning but more importantly to teach life lessons that can be so powerfully learned through sports," and complete online sensitivity training.

According to the newspaper, the investigation included interviews with Perry, 10 witnesses and 19 students. Fourteen people said Perry used profanity, 11 claimed he used Asian-American stereotypes, four said he made references to locker-room violence and 17 felt he made demeaning comments about student athletes.
