Special Olympic Recognizes Andover High School

The school was one of 16 in Massachusetts named a Unified Champion School.

Andover High School: Andover High School received national recognition from the Special Olympics as a Unified Champion School today. A Special Olympics Unified Champion School demonstrates an inclusive school climate and sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff. Andover High School is one of 16 schools in Massachusetts and 173 nationwide recognized for their work in the 2018-19 school year.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized as a Unified Champion School,” notes Sheldon Berman, superintendent of Andover Public Schools. “It is a testament to our students and staff who have demonstrated such a commitment to inclusion.” “We look forward to hanging the Unified Champion School banner with pride and celebrating with the community,” adds AHS Athletic Director Bill Martin. “This recognition is well-earned by all who encourage our
student-athletes to reach their best potential.” A Unified Champion School receiving national banner recognition is one that has demonstrated commitment to inclusion by meeting ten national standards of excellence. The primary activities within these standards include Special Olympics Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities train and compete as teammates, Inclusive Youth Leadership and Whole-School Engagement. Banner Unified Champion Schools are also able to demonstrate they are self-sustainable and have a plan in place to sustain these activities into the future.
