200 Giraffes Hidden in Arlington

Be on the lookout this summer for 200 wooden giraffes that will be placed in "green" spaces throughout the next few weeks.

Over the course of the summer, 200 giraffes are going to be hidden among Arlington's green spaces and libraries by Artbeat, the creativity store in east Arlington.

Part of the Summer reading program through the Robbins Library, the giraffes will be hidden along the bike path, at Spy Pond, the Reservoir, Menotomy Rocks Park, Robbins Farm and other "green" spaces in town.

"It's really meant to be a family adventure - keep your eyes out for these little giraffes when you're exploring Arlington parks and libraries. If you find a giraffe, decorate it and bring it to us to be put on display," said Jan Whitted of Artbeat.

Those who find giraffe are encouraged to decorate it by drawing, painting, embellishing, or using it as part of a larger art project. There is only one giraffe per person and Artbeat will take them and display the found giraffes all summer.

"When our adventure is over in September, your giraffe will gladly go home with you," said Whitted.

This project is similar to the "summer letterboxing adventure for families" Artbeat ran a few summers ago. "It was a lot of fun," said Whitted who also hopes families will get into the adventure of searching for and decorating these giraffes all summer long.

"It will be happening all summer," Whitted said. "There's a secret group of giraffe hiders putting more out every week. So far four have been returned to us."
