AC Girls Fall to League's Best

Cougars can't match Bishop Fenwick, lose 2-0.

The Arlington Catholic girls' soccer team played tough against the Catholic Central League's top team, but ultimately fell 2-0 to Bishop Fenwick yesterday afternoon at Dallin Elementary.

The Cougars (2-3, 2-2) played without senior captain Katie D'Entremont and junior defender Leanne Comeau;  the two standout players were both out due to illness.

"We still hung in there against the best team in our league," Cougars coach Manny Bermejo said. "I thought we had some good chances today."

Bishop Fenwick (7-1, 5-0) is undefeated in the league thanks, in large part, to its star striker, Kristin Verrette. The senior lived up to the hype Monday, netting two first half goals.

Freshman striker Kaila Sullivan, sophomore Laura Kalton and junior Natalie Flynn put pressure on Bishop Fenwick keeper Rebecca Graves, especially in the first half. But Graves came out on a number of threatening through-passes and stifled a few key corners to earn the shutout.

In the midfield, senior captain Erin Nee and sophomore Paige Prokop led the Cougars' transition game, while junior Emma Roberson, freshman Stephanie Kelley and sophomore Caroline Smith played well in defense with Comeau out.

The teams played a fairly back-and-forth game, with neither team dominating possession or field position.

The two captains, D'Entremont and Nee, are the only two seniors on a very young Arlington Catholic squad. Five freshmen, six sophomores and three juniors round out the roster.

The Cougars return to action against Matignon (4-5, 4-4) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Thompson Elementary.
