ARLINGTON, MA — A new food-access program is bringing fresh groceries and other essentials directly to residents of an Arlington Housing Authority property.
Arlington EATS launched its Mini Market at Drake Village this spring, offering an on-site version of the organization's EATS Market at 117 Broadway. The satellite market provides fresh produce, pantry staples, dairy products, proteins, and other items to residents of the housing complex.
Drake Village is the Arlington Housing Authority's largest property, with 216 units for income-qualified seniors and adults with disabilities. Arlington EATS launched the Mini Market in part to address transportation and mobility challenges that can make traveling to its main market difficult for residents. The organization estimates the new location can serve approximately 150 households each month. Residents can shop once per week at either the Mini Market or the main EATS Market. The Drake Village location is currently open Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shopping is available by appointment, with drop-ins generally accommodated after the first hour when space allows.
The Mini Market is part of a broader network of food-access programs offered by Arlington EATS. The organization operates its free, full-choice market at 117 Broadway, allowing residents to select groceries based on their household needs rather than receiving prepackaged food. Arlington EATS also provides home delivery for residents unable to shop in person, snacks in Arlington Public Schools, vacation and summer lunch programs, and Fresh Bucks for purchases at the Arlington Farmers' Market.
The Drake Village expansion also includes Cook & Thrive, a senior wellness program offered in partnership with Tufts University's Food is Medicine Institute. The program combines groceries with meal kits, recipes, nutrition education, and optional blood pressure screenings. Arlington EATS has described the Mini Market as a pilot program developed in partnership with the Arlington Housing Authority and supported by seed funding from community members.
