Arlington Board of Selectmen to Discuss 'Sanctuary Town' Warrant Article: Report

Sanctuary cities were a polarizing issue in the 2016 campaign. Should Arlington become a sanctuary town?

ARLINGTON, MA — Fresh off the heels of the inauguration of a president that plans to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities, the Arlington Board of Selectmen will discuss a proposed warrant article that would make the town a sanctuary town.

According to a report from the Arlington Advocate, the Arlington Human Rights Commission will present a warrant article that would make Arlington a sanctuary town to the Board of Selectman during Monday night's meeting. The language in the proposed article adds that the resolution "shall not prevent law enforcement" from investigating or charging someone in a crime.

Newly-minted President Donald Trump made immigration policy a key issue in his campaign, vowing to tighten U.S. borders. Trump has threatened to cut federal funding from sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities across the United States are municipalities that have established policies that don't require local agencies to go after residents simply based on their status as U.S. citizens.
