Arlington Food Pantry Enacts New Security Measures After Fight
The safety plan was developed after two people got into an altercation over their spot in line.

ARLINGTON, MA – Officials at the Arlington Food Pantry have enacted a new safety plan following an altercation earlier this month, Director of Health and Human Services Christine Bongiorno announced Monday.
Staff will now undergo training on conflict de-escalation and mediation, and the Arlington Police Department will assign an officer to the pantry during peak morning and evening distribution periods. The guidelines come after a March 14 incident during which two people got into a fight over their place in line. The altercation resulted in yelling, pushing and a punch being thrown, officials said.
Those involved in the fight have been banned from the pantry. Pantry staff will work to connect them with alternative resources to address their nutritional needs.

Volunteers at the food pantry will also be trained to administer Narcan in the event of an opioid overdose.
"Our top priority is ensuring that everyone who visits the pantry or helps fulfill its mission can rest assured knowing that it's a safe and comfortable place," Bongiorno said in a statement. "We are grateful for the continued support of the community members who make our work possible, and for the Arlington Police Department's commitment to safety."
