ARLINGTON, MA — Arlington residents approved a debt exclusion to fund the town's portion of a new high school Tuesday. The project is estimated at close to $291 million, with the Massachusetts School Building Authority kicking in a little over $86 million.

Voters approved raising property taxes to pay back bonds sold to fund the remaining $204.8 million.

"It is an honor for the teachers, administrators, and staff to know that Arlington voters support anew high school," Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said in a statement Tuesday. "The new school will enable high-quality education that is active, collaborative, connected to the outside world, and purposeful."

What's next for the project? A detailed design will be developed over the next year, and phased construction will start in 2020, according to town officials. The performing arts and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) wings are expected to be completed by early 2022 and the building is projected to be fully finished the 2024.

Project partners for the AHS Building project include Skanska USA as Owner’s Project Manager
(OPM) and HMFH Architects as project designer. Skanska was the OPM for the Winchester
High School renovation/addition, which was completed in September 2017. HMFH designed the
Thompson School, as well as the six-classroom addition, completed in September 2018. The
Construction Manager will be selected and announced in the coming weeks.
