Arlington Police Welcome New Furry Officer

The APD's newest K-9's first day on the job was Jan. 4.

ARLINGTON, MA — You may have noticed a new furry officer patrolling the streets of Arlington.

On Wednesday, the Arlington Police Department announced the addition of of K-9 Eiko to the Arlington police force. The 18-month old has already received an extensive amount of training, recently completing a 14-week K-9 training course at the Boston Police Canine Academy.

"We are pleased to welcome Eiko to the department and look forward to furthering his training for the betterment of our patrol unit," Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said. "Additionally, I'd like to thank Officer Hogan for the time he has devoted to K-9 training and handling."

The German Shepherd pup has already received 10 months of training before joining the department, and will undergo a six-week narcotics detection training this year to become a dual-purpose K-9.

He joins K-9 Dasty, who has been with the department for the past decade. Eiko is being groomed to take over for Dasty when he retires.
