Arlington Recommends 2 Designs For Whittemore Park Project

See the final two options, which were presented at a Town Hall forum June 20.

ARLINGTON, MA – The Arlington Department of Planning and Community Development has recommended two designs for the Whittemore Park Planning Project. The options were presented at a June 20 forum in the Town Hall auditorium.

The designs were selected based on the goals of enhancing small and large gathering opportunities; improving and providing more types of seating; preserving railroad tracks and improving interpretation; and balancing tree preservation with a healthy lawn.

The town sought input from the community on the park design at three meetings from April to June. An online survey received 500 responses as well. Project designer Crowley Cottrell will create a final design plan this summer based on the two recommendations and prepare cost estimates and a potential construction schedule.

The project, backed by Community Preservation Act funds, is aimed at continuing to transform the park into a focal point for recreation and civic functions, as well as a place to appreciate Arlington's heritage. Crowley Cottrell is supported by a working group comprised of representatives from the Historical Commission, Historic Districts Commission, Dallin Museum, Chamber of Commerce, Cutter Gallery and property and business owners in Arlington Center.
