Arlington Schools Add 'Ms.' To Curriculum Amid Parent Concerns

A group of parents asked why the prefix was not included in lessons that taught "Mr." and "Mrs."

ARLINGTON, MA – Arlington Public Schools will now teach the prefix "Ms." as part of its early elementary school curriculum. According to the Arlington Advocate, a group of parents reached out to teachers asking that the prefix be included on spelling sheets that taught "Mr." and "Mrs."

One of the parents told the Advocate they were met with some resistance, a claim that Peirce Principal Karen Hartley refuted. She said the word will be taught as part of the curriculum next year.

Officials have said the prefix was not intentionally left off the list of taught words but was not a part of the phonics curriculum, Fundations, that the district has used for almost 10 years. The curriculum has words a first-grader is likely to come across while reading. These are not intended to be all the words a first-grader would encounter, officials told the Advocate.
