Back-to-School Safety Tips from the Arlington Police Department
Many area schools are back in session this week, and Arlington returns next week. Here are some safety tips for traveling in school zones.

ARLINGTON, MA — Many area schools are back in session this week, and Arlington's public schools begin classes next week.
In light of that, the Arlington Police Department is offering tips to those traveling in school zones. Here are various tips for drivers, students and parents; courtesy of the Arlington Police Department.
Drivers
- Please use extreme caution when traveling in school zones
- The speed limit around all school zones in MA is 20 miles per hour
- Never pass a school bus with red flashers or a stop sign visible
- Always stop for a patrol officer or a designated crossing guard
- Never pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians crossing
Students
- Always look BOTH WAYS when crossing a roadway.
- Put your phone away and be aware of your surroundings
- Always walk on the sidewalk if possible
- Always walk or bike with friends and don't stop for strangers
- Wear a seatbelt when in a car and a helmet when on a bike
Parents
- Make sure your children know their emergency contact information
- Talk to your children about 'stranger danger.'
- Do not park in crosswalks when dropping off.
- Always walk with and wait at bus stops with younger children
