Car in Spy Pond: Frightened Woman Saved by Bystanders from Sinking Car

VIDEO: Bystanders rushed to save a woman who accidentally drove a vehicle into Spy Pond in Arlington, and the rescue was caught on video.

ARLINGTON, MA — Bystanders rushed into the cold October waters of Spy Pond in Arlington Friday afternoon to save a woman from a vehicle that was accidentally driven into the water.

Police say that a 68-year-old Medford woman was allegedly attempting to back into a parking lot on Linwood Circle and drove over a curb and into the pond at 1:02 p.m. Three bystanders immediately jumped into the water to save her.

The woman was cold, but otherwise unhurt according to police.

A video captured at the scene showed a man swimming out to save the woman who accidentally drove a vehicle into Spy Pond near Linden Street. The video shows the man attempting to save the woman while the vehicle sinks into the pond. A second man swims out to assist in the rescue before police and firefighters approach the scene.

The video shows the car sinking into the depths of the pond with a man frantically trying to free the woman from the vehicle. As the vehicle becomes completely submerged, the man yells, "I lost her!"

Seconds after view of the car was lost, the woman surfaced and was helped back to safety.

The Cambridge Dive Team is responding to ensure the vehicle is unoccupied, and police are still on hand removing the vehicle from the pond.
