ARLINGTON, MA — New shade sails and benches are being installed at Broadway Plaza this week as Arlington continues efforts to make public spaces more resilient to extreme heat.
Town officials said contractor Perez Landscaping is scheduled to begin work on Thursday, June 11 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. The project is expected to be completed by June 12.
During the work, businesses and outdoor dining areas in Broadway Plaza will remain open. No changes to traffic patterns or MBTA bus service are planned, according to the town.

One bike rack near the work zone may be difficult to access during construction, but most bicycle parking will remain available.
The project will add shade sails and benches to the plaza as part of Arlington's ongoing climate adaptation efforts. Town bid documents for the project called for the installation of two shade structures and two metal park benches at the public gathering space.

Broadway Plaza, located in Arlington Center, was created as part of a larger streetscape improvement project and serves as a public space for outdoor dining, community gatherings and pedestrian activity. Businesses remained open during the plaza's construction and reconstruction work in recent years.
Perez Landscaping, a Massachusetts-based landscaping and site contractor, was selected by the town to complete the installation.
Town officials said visitors should exercise caution while accessing Broadway Plaza during the work.
The town thanked residents, visitors and local businesses for their patience while the improvements are completed.
