Star Trek premiered on NBC in the fall of 1966. Over the next 50 years, across five television series, an animated series, and twelve motion pictures, the Trek franchise developed a fictional universe of such depth, richness, and detail that it became the subject of books—serious, non-fiction books—by specialists from a number of academic disciplines: The Physics of Star Trek, The Biology of Star Trek, The Ethics of Star Trek, and many others. W. D. Kay, a political scientist at Northeastern University who specializes in science and technology policy, continues this tradition with his forthcoming book The Politics of Star Trek.
