Hancock United Church of Christ of Lexington invites the public to join in as they celebrate the end of the church year with guest artist, acclaimed jazz violinist Ben Powell. The celebration will take place on November 20th at their alternative service The Well, which takes place in Clark Hall at Hancock at 6:15 p.m. each week. Powell will be joining the resident ensemble for The Well, The River Rock Band. Also joining the Band for the evening is Lexington native, jazz pianist Malcolm Campbell.
The Church Year—In Jazz! will celebrate the end of the liturgical year with reflections and music from each season of the year: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. “This is a terrific opportunity to give people a sense of the whole of the annual Christian journey, and to use some familiar music in a totally different way,” says Director of Music, Mark Morgan. “The Well is an intimate and informal setting that anybody can feel welcome in regardless of whether they think they are a ‘church person’ or not—some come for the music, some for the message, some just for the atmosphere and community,” he continues.
Ben Powell is a Berklee graduate and hails from Cheltenham, England. A noted jazz performer, he has played with a wide range of jazz and pop icons including Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, and Steve Winwood. He has recently led sold out shows at Scullers in Boston, and the Sunset in Paris. His group makes regular appearances on the National Public Radio Show Says You!
